Speak, Memory

The piece emerged from my rediscovery of a forgotten cache of 7,659 photographs taken after moving from the UK to Cairo in 2012. The photographs reflect my struggle to adjust to a new home and the distinct gap between private and public that the move brought with it. I witnessed a society in transformation but, as an outsider, I felt out of my depth and isolated. I turned inward. Consequently, over a period of two years,
I photographed myself repeatedly while remaining unsure of the purpose or meaning of the images. In 2015, I looked at these photographs with different eyes. Observing my past documented self invited a process of reflection on memory, belonging and the sense of self within crisis. Speak, Memory was produced by Yvonne Buchheim with the support of Spring Sessions, Amman, Jordan in 2015. Arabic Translation: Ahmad Zatari Text Editor: Yaser Al Amad Selected stills
